About Lutheran Schools . . .

LUTHERAN SCHOOLS TOPS IN THE NATION ON "THE NATION'S REPORT CARD"

Accountability! Results - what difference does it make? We are becoming a data-driven nation in regard to our schools. Whether you agree with that direction or not, it is where we are at this moment in our nation's history. Parents want to know if their child is receiving a quality education.

The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), also known as "The Nation's Report Card," is the only nationally representative and continuing assessment of what America's students know and can do in various subject areas.

The report is in and the news is GREAT for our Lutheran schools. In five of the eight categories we finished in first place among nine other categorizations. In the other three we finished second. The groups included the following: public, other religious, nonsectarian, Catholic, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Dept. of Defense, State Department of Education, Lutheran, and Conservative Christian.

Lutheran Schools finished first in science in the 4th, 8th and 12th grades (grades where data was gathered). In reading we finished 1st in 4th and 8th grade (data was not gathered for the 12th grade). In math we finished 2nd in 4th, 8th and 12th grades.

  • In 4th grade science the average Lutheran student score was 166; Catholic school students scored at 162; conservative Christian at 159, and public school students at 149.
  • In 8th grade science: Lutheran-170, Catholic-166, Conservative Christian-162, and public-149. .
  • In 4th grade reading (2002) Lutheran-236, Catholic-234, Conservative Christian-229, and public-217
  • In 8th grade math Other private students-298, Lutheran-296, Catholic-289, Conservative Christian-286, and public-276.

Some might argue that Lutheran schools have parents who are move involved. Some might say that attending a Lutheran school is a choice. Some would say that it is not fair to compare students from different types of schools because each school type is unique. To each of these statements there is truth. Students attending Lutheran schools are blessed to have parents who are very concerned about the education their children receive. Students attending a Lutheran school do so by choice. Those who do not want to take advantage of those blessings are excused from that choice. Each school and each school type is unique.

In Lutheran schools, in addition to teaching math, reading, science and all the other subjects, we have the unique privilege of sharing with students and families the most important truth of all: God has won the victory over sin and death for eternity through the death and resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ.

Lutheran schools are great places to grow. We thank God for the students and families who have the privilege of attending Lutheran schools. Lutheran schools, like any schools, are not perfect. In Lutheran schools students learn that they are forgiven and that they also can forgive others because of Jesus Christ. And yes, we do thank God for great test scores. And we thank God for teachers, parents, administrators, boards and congregations who continue to strive for excellence to serve our God who gave us our gifts and talents and to serve our fellow man. Praise God for his blessings!

(Author's note: This article is in no way meant to belittle public schools or other private or non-public schools. I thank God for the Christian teachers we do have in our public schools. There are many Christian students giving witness to their friends and teachers in public schools.)

A Little Bit About Emanuel Lutheran School

Academic Excellence in a Caring Christian Community

 Academic Excellence:

In addition to our literature based classroom reading program, the students at Emanuel are encouraged to make reading for enjoyment a priority!  Our Accelerated Reader Program offers the motivation for independent reading.  Students read every evening in addition to their homework and take computerized comprehension tests as they complete each book.  Our new library is full of books that are organized by reading ability.  The program is highly motivational as they earn points and win prizes and awards.  Another motivation for the children to work co-operatively to earn has many points as they can is the Principal=s Challenge.  This is a highly anticipated event to see what crazy thing they can get the Principal to do!  Many recognitions for individual reading achievement are given each year.  This commitment to creating a life long love of reading has been a keystone to our program.

Our Computer lab along with the computers in each classroom are a wonderful tool for the children.  Instant connection to the internet has been a great addition to the classrooms as they study different topics in real time.  Only half of each class goes to the lab at a time, providing an opportunity for small group instruction.

All students in grades K - 6 are learning Spanish.  This is not a required elementary school subject, but we feel that it is key to start early when learning a language.  Most of our students go onto honors classes in Spanish when they enter Junior High School.

All State tests that apply to grades K - 6 are given at Emanuel.  Our emphasis is on preparing students for the test , not teaching to the test.  State standards are used in all classrooms.  53% of our fourth grade class received a 4 (the highest score possible) on the state Math test!  The remaining students received a 3 (level) and 2 students scored a 2 (level).  This was an amazing display of effort on the students= part and a glowing example of how our teachers train the children of Emanuel.

Personalized instruction is available for children with the need for support and for those students who have the ability to accelerate.  Every child is treated as a unique learner.  Great attention is paid to individual learning styles and the mastery of the basics.  Early intervention is key to supporting our learners.  Immediate attention is given to students who show a need for support.  Gifted programs are offered to students who need to be challenged.

The teachers of Emanuel create a high standard of learning.  Almost all of our teachers hold their Master=s degree.  Those who do not, are working toward that goal.  Continuing education opportunities are provided each year to keep current on standards.  Emanuel chooses to hire only teachers who are certified.  Art, P.E. and Music teachers are certified in their area. We believe that this commitment to excellence is essential.

Caring Community:

The children of Emanuel are known to all of the teachers, administration and support staff.  It is a blessing to hear each child called by name by every adult in the building.  There are no unknown, nameless faces.  Imagine the impact of being important and special enough to the adults that care for you to know who you are.

Behavioral expectations are very clear.  The children at Emanuel are not perfect!  The difference at Emanuel is that each misbehavior is dealt with on an individual basis.  Nothing is too small to be addressed.  For this reason discipline problems are rare.  The little problems are dealt with before they become big problems.  Parents are our greatest asset in this area.  Their support and cooperation with school staff is what lets a child know that the adults in their life are working as a team to help them become the wonderful person that God intended.

Safety and security is a priority at Emanuel.  Our doors are locked at all times.  The only entrance available to visitors is controlled by an electronic lock in the front office.  Our staff is trained in lock down and emergency procedures.  Lockdown procedures are practiced with the children much the same as fire drills.

Christian Community:

We are here because of God=s will, to share Christ=s love and to be a place that is alive in the Holy Spirit!

There is no better positive reinforcement than when a child knows that they are loved (no matter what!) by their Heavenly Father!  A child who hears of God=s promises every day, from teachers who love the Lord is starting their spiritual journey with a firm foundation.  Families are supported in times of joy and sorrow.  The staff gathers each morning to study God=s word and to pray for the children and families that we serve.

The children who leave Emanuel are not sheltered from the world; they are equipped to see things for what they really are and make wise decisions.

The students at Emanuel are taught to worship God.  Chapel and Praise and daily classroom devotions offer an opportunity to come close to the work of our Father and to have Him come close to us.  The children begin each day with a statement of Praise and close each day in prayer.

Extra Curricular Activities include:  Choir, Bell Choir, Soccer, Basketball, Softball, Cheerleading, YMCA swimming, Student Council and Challenge. The cost for these programs is included in the tuition.  Fees or dues are collected for only the following activities: Band, Scouting and Bowling.  We also have a very active parent=s group.

Note to Church Families:  Please contact the school office about Church Member discounts and tuition assistance.  You can afford to give your children a Christian Education!  It makes a difference!

Train up a child in the way he should go. And when he is old he will not turn from it.
